Mining

There are huge mineral deposits in Mauritania, including copper, phosphates and perhaps even oil. There has even been evidence of deposits of uranium and tungsten.Production of iron ore, mainly from Mauritania's rich deposits in the Fdérik area, totaled 7.5 million metric tons in 1999. Copper mining, once an important industry, was discontinued in 1978.
