Only one seventh of the total number of roads are paved in the country. For example, the roads from Nouakchott are only paved as far as Kiffa, Akjoujt and Rosso. The Trans-Mauritanian highway was opened in 1978 and links Nouakchott and Nema.
All routes, which are not paved, are sand tracks.
